"Why Women Still Need Husbands"

This article by Suzanne Venker has caused a lot of controversy and sparked a heated debate about marriage and women being dependent on men and we've been talking a lot recently about domesticity and the changing roles of women over recent decades so I wanted to know what you all think of the article. Personally it offended me because she seems to ignore not only different sexual orientations but also blames the fact that there are fewer male breadwinners today on women and makes it seems like it's a bad thing that more women are working. What do you all think?

  1. This reminds me of that story that was blowing up last spring about the Princeton mom who urged all female Princeton students to use their time there to find a husband (and do it fast!) because once they leave Princeton, and each year closer to graduation they get, the smaller their pool of eligible men is going to get. I think both pieces make a lot of the same mistaken assumptions and seem to have elicited a lot of the same criticism. I can't find the letter she wrote itself, but here's an article about her: http://www.today.com/news/princeton-moms-letter-telling-women-find-husband-campus-strikes-nerve-1C9179555

  3. The language of Suzanne Venker's article reminded me of something Phyllis Schlafly would write--I felt like this could have been an accompanying text for the section on modern female conservatives in the course.

Venker makes so many invalid assumptions--1. That all readers have the economic security to make the decision to "lean on [their] husband." 2. The statement, "a man's identity is inextricably linked to his paycheck" shocked me. Personally, I would list family as the most important factor in my life. My career will always come second to those I love. Finally, it is offensive to claim that women need men in order to achieve the "balance" they are looking for. Every individual has a different formula for what makes them happy, but it is ridiculous to assume that women need men in order to gain satisfaction in their lives.
